About TommyWrites | Content Writer
Tom Brooks brings a complete set of skills to your project as a content writer, marketer and seasoned small business owner and operator. His education includes a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Baylor University and a master’s degree from the Kiplinger Program of Public Affairs Reporting at Ohio State University.
Tom spent 12 years as a reporter, writer and editor for United Press International, which was the world’s largest independent news gathering organization. Working for an international news service, UPI writers competed for space with local newspaper staffs and reporters from other wire services. To win space, the news copy had to be concise and quickly on-point – the same qualities required to get and keep a reader’s attention in today’s media-rich market.
Tom’s last four years with UPI were spent in sales and marketing the news service. After UPI, Tom owned and operated the Alphagraphics design, print and marketing services company in Richardson, TX. Tom sold his Alphagraphics location in late 2013 and returned to his writing roots with the formation of TommyWrites.
Why does Tom’s background matter? Simple. Journalists are trained skeptics. He knows what will create skepticism among your readers, and how to avoid it (tell the truth and don’t hype). His marketing background and 29 years of owning a small business give him the knowledge and empathy to grasp your organization’s needs and efforts.
Tom grew up in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas. He spent his middle school years in Beirut, Lebanon, where his father worked in the oil business. He moved to Plano, TX in 1980 while with UPI and still resides there.
Tom’s specialties are news/press releases, website content, email newsletters, blogs, print newsletters and human interest stories. He can produce great copy for nearly any medium.
